TSA Introduces “Families on the Fly”: A Game‐Changer for Traveling Families

July 18, 2025 — The Department of Homeland Security, in partnership with TSA, has launched the Families on the Fly campaign to put families first at security checkpoints. This initiative aims to make traveling with kids smoother, faster, and significantly less stressful  .

🛂 What Is Families on the Fly?

This new program creates dedicated family lanes at select U.S. airports, where families with young children—think strollers, diapers, and wriggling toddlers—can bypass crowded general lines. The pilot program saw early success at Orlando International Airport (MCO), chosen for its heavy family travel traffic   .

📍 Where You’ll Find Family Lanes

Active now at:
• Orlando (MCO)
• Charlotte (CLT)

Coming soon:
• John Wayne (SNA)
• Honolulu (HNL)

Expanding to:
• Charleston (CHS), Jacksonville (JAX), Providence (PVD), San Juan (SJU), Tampa (TPA) — with more to follow  .

💵 Perks & Discounts

• $15 off TSA PreCheck® enrollment for families signing up soon  .
• Children under 12 travel free through PreCheck with a qualifying adult; teens 13–17 ride along if on the same reservation  .
• Service members and their families enjoy free PreCheck access via DoD ID, and programs like Serve with Honor offer free PreCheck for Gold Star families and $25 discounts for military spouses  .

👨‍👩‍👧 Why Families Benefit

1. Less stress — dedicated lanes handle strollers, diaper bags, and parents better.
2. Faster throughput — quicker screening means less waiting and more time relaxing before your flight.
3. PreCheck synergy — combine family lanes with expedited screening to breeze through checkpoints.
4. Inclusive of all families — especially military families, with layered benefits designed to recognize their needs and service.

🚀 TSA’s Broader Airline Enhancements

Families on the Fly is part of a bigger TSA mission to improve traveler experience.
• TSA has eliminated the “shoes-off” rule in many cases, even outside PreCheck  .
• They’re exploring looser liquid limit restrictions, though the 3‑1‑1 rule still stands  .

✅ Travel Pro Tips for Families

• Enroll in TSA PreCheck early (with the $15 discount) to enjoy both the family lane and express screening perks.
• Book teens on the same reservation as you to secure PreCheck benefits for them.
• Pack smart using TSA’s 3‑1‑1 rules and keep strollers/carriers handy for quick screening.
• Use TSA Cares—a dedicated assistance line—for travelers with special needs or added support requirements.

🌟 Final Take

Families on the Fly marks a major shift toward more empathetic, family-friendly airport travel. With dedicated lanes, PreCheck discounts, and a commitment to reducing stress, TSA is saying loud and clear: We’re making travel easier for families. Pair these new perks with other streamlined security updates, and air travel is starting to look a lot less like a chore—and a lot more like part of the adventure.
